My voice faltered once.
I let it.
“And twice, we lost them.”
Ryan’s smile faded slightly.
“I spent years believing those losses meant my body had failed.”
I looked toward Patricia.
“Some people made sure I believed that.”
Patricia stood.
“That’s enough.”
I ignored her.
“Eight months ago, Ryan divorced me because he said I could never give him a family.”
Ryan stepped closer.
“Mia.”
“This morning, he called and invited me here.”
Lauren smiled faintly.
“He told me you were pregnant.”
Now people were watching her.
“He told me you had given him what I never could.”
Ryan reached for the microphone.
I stepped away.
“But Ryan forgot something important.”
“What?”
His tone had changed.
I reached into the folder.
I removed the DNA report.
Then I looked directly at him.
“I gave birth to your daughter yesterday.”
The ballroom went silent.
Not quiet.
Silent.
The kind of silence so complete I heard someone drop a fork thirty feet away.
Ryan stared at me.
Lauren’s hand fell from her stomach.
Patricia closed her eyes.
Ryan laughed.
But the sound came out wrong.
“What?”
I held up the paper.
“Our daughter was born at 12:43 yesterday morning.”
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
“You’re insane.”
“Court-certified DNA testing says otherwise.”
His face lost color.
“How did you—”
“You remember the blood sample you submitted during our divorce because your attorney challenged the embryos?”
His lips parted.
Naomi smiled from the aisle.
Ryan looked at her.
Then at me.
“You were pregnant?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
