“Eight months after divorcing me because I “couldn’t give him a family,”

The call came at 6:17 in the morning, while the Chicago skyline was still gray behind the hospital windows and my newborn daughter slept three feet away from me.

I had given birth thirty hours earlier.

Every muscle in my body hurt.

My hair was tangled.

There were bruises along the inside of my arms where nurses had struggled to find a vein during labor, and beneath the thin hospital blanket, my body felt like it had been taken apart and badly reassembled.

But none of that mattered.

Because for the first time in years, I was happy.

Not the careful kind of happiness I had learned to fake during my marriage.

Not the kind you post online because you want people to believe everything is fine.

Real happiness.

Quiet.
