There was a photograph of her mother, younger and smiling, standing between two little girls.
On the back, Sarah had written:
My daughters. My greatest joy. If they ever read this together, perhaps I can finally rest.
Emily’s eyes filled with tears.
For the first time in ten years, she felt close to her mother again.
Anna reached for her hand.
“She loved you so much,” she whispered.
Emily squeezed her sister’s fingers.
“Then let’s finish what she started.”
Outside, the rain had stopped.
But neither sister noticed the dark car parked across the street.
Inside it, a man watched the house through the windshield.
He picked up his phone.
“She’s found Anna,” he said quietly. “And they’ve got the notebook.”
A voice answered on the other end.
“Then make sure they never find out what’s on the last page.”
The man ended the call.
