A sharp gasp echoed down the line. “Two hundred and fifty million?” Nina whispered. “We don’t have that in liquidity. Not even close. Payroll is on Friday!”

“Well,” I said, resting my cheek against my knuckles. “Martin wanted to modernize leadership. Let’s see how his slides look when the bank freezes our clearing accounts at noon.”

Part 3: The Boardroom Anatomy

Upstairs, the boardroom looked less

like an executive suite and more like a crime scene.

Martin Vale’s slim gray suit was no longer immaculate. The jacket was draped over the back of a leather chair, his silk tie loosened, his sleeves rolled up in a pathetic imitation of my grandfather’s portrait downstairs. He was bright red in the face, leaning so far over the mahogany table that his nose was nearly touching the speakerphone.

“Find her!” Martin roared at the phone, his voice cracking with the frantic pitch of a man realizing too late that he had jumped out of an airplane without a parachute. “Call her cell! Offer her a bonus! Offer her a corner office on the tenth floor! Just get Clara Tennant back in this building before the wire transfers fail at midday!”

“Her mother was Martha Tennant,” Bauer replied, his tone dropping three degrees. “The sole surviving heir to forty-eight percent of the voting stock, which she quietly placed into an irrevocable family trust managed exclusively by—let me check the registry here—ah, yes. Clara Tennant herself. You didn’t fire an employee, Mr. Vale. You terminated your landlord.”

Silence fell over the room, heavy and suffocating.

Sarah Vance, having finally emerged from the restroom with damp

paper towels pressed to her forehead, raised a trembling hand. “Martin… there’s something else.”

“What?!” he snapped.

“I… I looked at the logistics master lease for the central distribution hubs this morning after you left the room,” she whispered. “The warehouses in Chicago, Savannah, and Dallas… they aren’t owned by Tennant Logistics.”

Martin stared at her, his bloodshot eyes wide. “What are they owned by?”

“A private holding entity called CT Holdings LLC,” Sarah swallowed hard. “We’ve been paying them a monthly lease of four hundred thousand dollars for the last twelve years. I called the registry to check who the principal shareholder of CT Holdings is…”

“And?”

“It’s Clara,” Sarah breathed. “She bought the land during the 2008 crash with her personal inheritance to keep the company from going under during the liquidity crunch. We’ve been renting our own loading docks from her for over a decade at a
