“There is no mistake, Mrs. Miller,” Mr. Harper said, his expression remaining perfectly blank. “Please, let us help you settle in.”
The suite was larger than our entire apartment, the air smelling of clean linens and the sea.
Lily sat on the edge of the king-sized bed, her small legs dangling, her face the color of skim milk.
She rested her head against the headboard, her eyes half-closed as she watched Ben arrange his blue ocean shell on the marble nightstand.
“Do you think Daddy knows we are here?” Lily asked, her voice barely a whisper.
I busied myself unpacking their small suitcase, placing their faded t-shirts into the clean drawers.
“Daddy is busy, sweetheart,” I said, my voice rising slightly as I spoke too fast. “We talked about this before we left home.”
“He didn’t say goodbye,” Ben said, placing a second shell next to the blue one.
