Three Days in Maine with Twin Children and a Walnut Box

The plastic hospital bracelets on the children’s wrists rattled against the brass luggage cart as we waited.

We had eighty-two thousand dollars in outstanding medical bills waiting on our kitchen counter back in Connecticut, but the lobby of the Shoreline Crest Hotel smelled of lavender and expensive floor wax.

I twisted my silver wedding ring around my finger, spinning the metal until the skin underneath turned red.

“We have a reservation under Vance,” I told the clerk behind the desk. “My father, Richard Vance, called it in on Tuesday.”

The clerk did not look at his computer screen.

Instead, a tall man in a dark, perfectly tailored suit stepped out from the office behind the desk, his gait measured and smooth.

“Mrs. Miller,” he said, his voice carrying the quiet weight of formal hospitality. “I am Daniel Harper, the general manager.”
