“Eight months after divorcing me because I “couldn’t give him a family,”

“She gave me what you never could.”

There it was.

The knife he had been sharpening for eight months.

I looked toward the bassinet.

My daughter shifted slightly beneath her blanket.

Her mouth opened in a tiny silent yawn.

Ryan kept talking.

“You always wanted a family, didn’t you? So I thought you might enjoy seeing what one looks like.”

I almost laughed.

Instead, memories came rushing toward me.

Fluorescent lights.

Ultrasound rooms.

Pregnancy tests lined along the bathroom counter.

The first positive result.

Ryan lifting me off my feet and spinning me around the kitchen.

The first bleeding.

The emergency room.

The doctor saying there was no heartbeat.

Six months later, the second pregnancy.

The second loss.

The fertility injections.

The hormone pills.
