“Before the divorce was final.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
That question almost made me angry again.
Instead, I answered calmly.
“Because three days after I discovered I was pregnant, your girlfriend sent me flowers congratulating herself for replacing me.”
Lauren’s smile disappeared.
I continued.
“Because your mother had already begun telling people I was emotionally unstable.”
Patricia shouted, “This is ridiculous.”
“And because I found $7.8 million missing from accounts connected to my grandmother’s inheritance.”
The room erupted.
Ryan stared at me.
Lauren turned toward him.
“What?”
I removed another document.
“Money transferred while I was undergoing fertility treatment.”
Ryan shook his head.
“I don’t know anything about that.”
“Some of it went through companies controlled by Lauren.”
Every eye moved toward the bride.
Lauren looked stunned.
“No.”
I named the companies.
“Brookline Strategy. Briarstone Consulting. Meridian Health Ventures.”
Lauren’s face changed.
Recognition.
Not guilt.
Fear.
Ryan grabbed my elbow.
“What are you trying to do?”
Naomi moved.
I raised one hand.
“I’m fine.”
Then I looked at Lauren.
“Do you know why Briarstone paid Dr. Evelyn Sloane almost nine hundred thousand dollars?”
