“Eight months after divorcing me because I “couldn’t give him a family,”

Patricia stared at me from the front row.

She had stopped pretending to enjoy herself.

Then Ryan said something unnecessary.

Something cruel.

Something perfectly Ryan.

“Sometimes life closes one door because you were meant for something better.”

His eyes flicked toward me.

Several guests followed his gaze.

There it was.

The humiliation.

Public.

Polished.

Deliberate.

I did nothing.

Lauren noticed.

Her smile widened.

The ceremony continued.

They exchanged rings.

They kissed.

Applause filled the ballroom.

And Ryan Brooks became a married man for the second time.

The reception began immediately.

Champagne flowed.

Music started.

I planned to leave.

That had genuinely been my intention.

I had enough.

Sloane’s confession.

The embryo records.

The financial documents.

Naomi could take the rest through courts.

Then Ryan took the microphone.

“Before dinner, I want to say something.”

I stopped.

Patricia stood.

“No.”

Too late.

Ryan smiled at the room.

“Most of you know this hasn’t always been an easy journey for me.”

Naomi muttered, “Oh, he is not doing this.”

Ryan continued.

“My first marriage ended painfully.”

Guests became uncomfortable.

Lauren placed one hand on his arm, but she was smiling.

“For years, I thought I would never become a father.”

My pulse slowed.

“I believed something was wrong with me for wanting a family badly enough to walk away.”

He looked directly at me.

“But today, I know I made the right decision.”

Somewhere in the room, a glass touched a table.

Ryan raised his champagne.

“To second chances.”

He smiled at me.

“And to finally having the courage to choose life.”

Something strange happened then.

The anger left me.

Completely.

I had imagined this confrontation so many ways.

I thought I might scream.

Cry.

Throw documents across the table.

Instead, I stood.

The room quieted.

Ryan’s smile remained.

He thought I was about to give him exactly what he wanted.

A scene.

I walked toward the front.

Naomi whispered my name.

I kept walking.

Ryan lowered the microphone.

“Mia?”

I held out my hand.

“May I?”

He actually gave me the microphone.

That was how certain he was.

“How civilized,” Lauren whispered.

I looked at her.

Then at Ryan.

Then at nearly three hundred guests.

“I hadn’t planned to speak.”

Ryan smiled.

“Take your time.”

“Oh, I will.”

A few people laughed nervously.

I continued.

“Ryan is right about one thing.”

He lifted his chin.

“Our marriage ended painfully.”

The room became still.

“For years, we tried to have a child.”

Lauren touched her stomach.

I saw it.

So did half the room.

“I became pregnant twice.”
