“Eight months after divorcing me because I “couldn’t give him a family,”

The man who had sat beside me during two miscarriages and cried into my hair.

The man who, months later, had looked me in the eyes across our kitchen island and said:

“Maybe some women just aren’t meant to be mothers.”

Three rings passed.

Then four.

I almost let it stop.

Instead, I answered.

“Hello?”

Ryan didn’t bother greeting me.

“Come to my wedding.”

I stared through the glass at Lake Michigan.

“What?”

“My wedding. Today.”

His voice carried the same smug amusement I remembered from the last months of our marriage.

“You should come.”

I said nothing.

Ryan laughed.

“Come on, Mia. Don’t make this awkward. Lauren thought it would be mature.”

That was a lie.

Lauren did not do mature.

Lauren Vale had been Ryan’s executive assistant before she became the woman he insisted was “just a friend.”

Then his confidante.
