I set the grocery bags on the floor. \u201cNoah. Lily. Coats.\u201d
My mother blinked. \u201cDon\u2019t be dramatic, Claire.\u201d
I looked at my children. \u201cNow.\u201d
They came to me at once. Noah took Lily\u2019s hand. I helped them into their coats while everyone at the table stared as if I had interrupted some sacred ritual.
Vanessa laughed. \u201cWhere are you going? To McDonald\u2019s? That\u2019s more your level.\u201d
I grabbed Lily\u2019s backpack and Noah\u2019s inhaler from the side table. As I moved toward the door, my father\u2019s voice followed me.
\u201cYou walk out that door, don\u2019t expect help from this family.\u201d
I turned back once. \u201cYou have never helped us.\u201d
Then I opened the door and led my children into the cold Ohio afternoon.
In the car, Lily finally broke down crying.
Noah whispered, \u201cMom, did we do something wrong?\u201d
\u201cNo,\u201d I said, gripping the steering wheel. \u201cYou did nothing wrong.\u201d
A few minutes later, my phone began ringing.
First my mother called. Then Vanessa. Then my father.
I ignored every call.
Then a voicemail came through from my mother. Her voice was cracked, terrified, and almost unrecognizable.
