In the backyard, Lucy was kneeling picking up the pieces of a broken plate with her hands. His head was shaved and his cheekbones sunk. A bucket of dirty water rested at his feet.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cPick up the pieces, Lucy,\u201d cried my mother, Teresa, from the room. If someone cuts, I\u2019ll take them out of your food.<\/span><\/p>\n

I stopped behind the fence with the suitcase still in my hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

No one knew I was home.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teresa fired the doctors and then uttered a phrase that stirred my stomach.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lucy pointed to the new SUV, Brianna\u2019s manicure hall and remodeled house. Then he said he had been sleeping in the shed.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI just want to finish my treatment,\u201d he whispered.<\/span><\/p>\n

Teresa crossed her arms. \u201cYou should have thought about it before you got sick.<\/span><\/p>\n

I pushed the door to open it.<\/span><\/p>\n

My suitcase fell to the ground.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brianna dropped her glass. Theresa took her hand to her chest. Lucy looked at me like I was a ghost.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNathan\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I crossed the yard and knelt next to my wife. I felt it terribly light in my arms and smelled slightly of bleach, medicine and wet clothes.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m back, honey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

She kept repeating my name.<\/span><\/p>\n

Theresa immediately insisted that things were not what they looked like. He accused Lucy of becoming unbearable after getting sick, demanding money, breaking things and even stealing jewelry.<\/span><\/p>\n

I looked directly at the hummingbird pendant my mother was wearing around my neck.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLike that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Teresa covered it with her hand.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lucy told me that she had tried to sell the necklace to pay for a visit to the doctor, but Theresa had taken it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then I asked the question that no one wanted to answer.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat disease does it have?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Lucy touched her chest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCancer.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Eleven months.<\/span><\/p>\n

For eleven months, I was sending money while my wife was sick.<\/span><\/p>\n

Theresa argued that the treatment was expensive and that there were no guarantees. But wherever I looked, my money was obvious: new floors, a huge TV, leather furniture, granite countertops, the van outside, Brianna\u2019s state-of-the-art phone.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lucy had broken sandals and a six-year-old blouse.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHow much of my money did you use for treatment?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Finally, Theresa admitted that they had paid for some visits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lucy corrected her.<\/span><\/p>\n

I helped Lucy get up and told her we were going to the hospital.<\/span><\/p>\n

He accused me of having disappeared for four years and of having returned to treat my own family as if we were criminals. I rolled up my sleeves and showed him the burn scars and years of cuts working in the store.<\/span><\/p>\n

I looked at Lucy.<\/span><\/p>\n
