Your nails can reveal much more than you might imagine.
Although we often see them only as an aesthetic detail, they are actually a window into your internal health .
Therefore, noticing ridges, grooves, or changes in color on them isn’t always superficial: sometimes your body is trying to send you a message.
Have you noticed vertical or horizontal lines on your nails that weren’t there before? 🤔
Today I’ll explain what they mean, when to worry, and how you can improve their appearance naturally.
🧠 Your nails: a reflection of what’s going on inside you
Each nail grows from a small structure called the matrix , located beneath the skin.
Any changes in nutrition, stress, or circulation can disrupt this growth process, leading to visible marks or irregularities .
That’s why dermatologists say that nails are a reflection of your overall health .
And while ridges are often harmless, in other cases they can reveal hidden deficiencies or disorders .
🔹 Vertical stripes: the most common
Vertical lines ( running from the cuticle to the tip of the nail) are the most common, especially with age.
👉 Most common meaning:
They are a natural sign of aging or dryness of the nail .
Over time, the nail matrix loses uniformity and growth becomes less smooth.
However, if the stripes appear suddenly or become very pronounced, they may indicate:
-
Lack of B vitamins (especially biotin and B12).
-
Iron or zinc deficiency .
-
Digestive problems that prevent proper nutrient absorption.
-
Prolonged stress or lack of rest.
💡 What to do:
-
Increase your consumption of eggs, legumes, nuts, oily fish and green vegetables .
-
Moisturize your nails with castor, almond, or coconut oil.
-
Get plenty of sleep and avoid excessive stress: lack of sleep also weakens nails.
🔸 Horizontal stripes: attention, they may be a warning sign
Horizontal lines , or “Beau’s lines,” are different.
They appear as transverse grooves that interrupt the normal growth of the nail.
👉 Possible causes:
-
Recent high fevers.
-
Infections or diseases that affected the body.
-
Severe mineral deficiencies (zinc, iron, calcium).
-
Poorly controlled diabetes or circulatory problems.
-
Side effects of certain medications or chemotherapy.
In some cases, these streaks may be temporary, but if they appear repeatedly, you should consult a doctor .
💬 Dermatologists warn that these lines reflect a moment when the matrix stopped growing , something that doesn’t happen without a reason.
⚫ Dark or black stripes: beware of this sign
If you notice a brown or black line running across your nail (like a thin thread), pay attention.
Sometimes it’s due to bumps or bruises , but if the line is persistent, it could be more serious.
👉 It could indicate:
-
Accumulation of melanin (pigment) due to hormonal causes.
-
Use of certain drugs.
-
In rare cases, subungual melanoma , a type of skin cancer that develops under the nail.
💡 What to do:
If the line changes color, widens, or affects only one nail, see a dermatologist immediately.
The earlier it’s detected, the better the prognosis.
