She never screamed.
Never checked my phone.
Never asked questions.
She only looked at me as though she already knew the ending.
Valerie wanted everything.
An apartment.
Private appointments.
An SUV.
Money.
I gave it all.
One night Lucy asked:
“Are you actually sure that baby is yours?”
I looked at her with disgust.
“Don’t you dare. You’re bitter because you couldn’t give me one.”
She didn’t cry.
She only said:
“Sometimes God doesn’t punish quickly, Ray. He punishes perfectly.”
I walked away.
On delivery day, Valerie screamed for ten hours while I stayed by her side.
Then I heard the baby cry.
“It’s a boy.”
The nurse handed him to me.
And then I saw it.
The birthmark.
The dimple.
The eyebrow.
David’s face.
My legs shook.
“No…”
Valerie turned away.
She wasn’t surprised.
She just closed her eyes.
I knew the truth.
A nurse approached with papers.
“Mr. Mendez, we need a signature.”
I couldn’t release the child.
Then my phone vibrated.
Lucy had texted me.
“Congratulations, Ray. Today I also received my results.”
Something broke inside me.
There was a photo.
A positive pregnancy test.
Then another message:
