What Is Clove Water?
Clove water is a simple infusion made by steeping or gently boiling whole cloves in water.
The process allows some water-soluble and volatile compounds from the cloves to enter the liquid. After cooling and straining, the resulting preparation can be used as a scalp rinse or incorporated into a homemade hair-care routine.
A typical preparation uses:
- Whole cloves
- Clean water
- A saucepan
- A strainer or clean cloth
- A clean storage container
Some online recipes also combine cloves with ingredients such as cinnamon, rosemary, ginger, bay leaves, or essential oils. However, adding multiple strong ingredients can increase the possibility of irritation. A simple clove-water preparation is easier to evaluate and generally makes more sense for beginners.
Why Are Cloves Popular in Hair Care?
Cloves have been used traditionally in cooking, oral care, cosmetics, and herbal preparations for centuries.
Their popularity comes partly from their distinctive aromatic compounds. One of the best-known constituents of cloves is eugenol.
Eugenol has been studied for several biological properties, including antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. These properties have contributed to interest in clove-based personal-care products.
But there is an important distinction:
A compound having interesting biological activity in laboratory research does not automatically mean that a homemade clove rinse will produce dramatic hair growth in humans.
Hair growth is controlled by a complex biological process involving genetics, hormones, nutrition, inflammation, blood supply, and the hair follicle cycle.
Therefore, clove water should be viewed primarily as a cosmetic or traditional scalp-care preparation, not as a proven treatment for significant hair loss.
