Malia Obama had fans doing a double take as she recreated her mom Michelle Obama’s now-signature hairstyle during a rare public appearance. On September 7, the former first daughter—whose parents are Michelle and former President Barack Obama—leaned into her reputation as a Gen Z trendsetter by pairing a skin-baring top and baggy jeans with a bold beauty moment.

In photos shared by Hola! magazine, Malia could be seen joining a friend for a laidback Labor Day lunch in Los Angeles’s Los Feliz neighborhood. The 28-year-old filmmaker exuded cool-girl energy in timeless basics, going braless in a scoop-neck white tank top. She paired the effortless staple with a pair of low-rise oversized black jeans, showing off a glimpse of her divisive Y2K-coded sandals: A pair of black flip-flops.

Slinging an oversized black leather purse over one shoulder, Malia added a pair of black sunglasses after she enjoyed an afternoon meal at Little Dom’s. The Heart director upped the ante on her look with her hair, styling her hip-grazing auburn red hair in a half-up style that’s reminiscent of her mom Michelle.
