A schoolboy insisted that he was my son’s brother; when I finally saw his face, my knees almost failed.

In the end, both children ended up crying.

I stared at both of them.

“How is this possible?”

The director put her hands together.

“We’re waiting for Stefan’s parents. Once they arrive, I think everything will make more sense.”

The door opened behind me.

I turned around.

My younger sister, Beth, came in. RequestsFamily DNA Kits for Ancestry Analysis

I hadn’t spoken to Beth since shortly after Cole’s birth.

Mark had told me that being around my baby was too painful because she had learned that she herself could not have children.

I had called.

I had sent him an email.

I left one voice message after another.

Nothing.

Mark hugged me while I was crying and telling myself that sometimes the pain made people disappear.

Now Beth was standing in front of me.

He looked at me like he saw a ghost.

Then he looked at the director.

“Can the kids go back to class? We need to speak privately.”
Once they left, she turned to me.

“Really, Mark never told you?”

I laughed once, but I wasn’t funny.

“Tell me what?”

Beth’s face contracted.

Then he told me the story Mark had told him eight years earlier.

While I was unconscious after giving birth, he went to see her.

He told her the two babies were alive.

One of them needed additional medical attention.

He then claimed that I had made the request before things became dangerous.

According to him, I asked Beth to raise one of the twins because I was worried that Mark would be overwhelmed taking care of two babies.

I stared at her.

“No.”

Beth broke down in tears.

“At first I didn’t believe him.”

“No. I never said that.”
